Makeup Memories | Urban Decay Midnight Cowboy

Many years ago, back when Urban Decay was still available at Seiyu (now BHG) at Bugis Junction and Isetan Orchard at Wisma Atria, Midnight Cowboy – the brand’s iconic eyeshadow – caught my eye and inspired me to pen the piece below.

It’s a little contrived but I enjoyed writing it. Despite the blatant show of enthusiasm – who could blame me, it’s UD after all – and exclamation marks (yes, I realise I was a tad liberal) that make me cringe a little now, it remains one of my fondest creative makeup reviews for Emakemeup. I’ve left it unedited, for old times’ sake.

I still have this shadow. Housed in the original screw-top tin case, my Midnight Cowboy is showing a fair amount of pan. I barely use it these days though – sans lip products, I’m veering away from glitter as I age. :)

Everybody’s talkin’ at me
I don’t hear a word they’re sayin’*

Down in the makeup doldrums, I see Midnight Cowboy eyeshadow twinkling at me from the Urban Decay counter. I catch my breath.

Only the echoes of my mind.

Must…have…that…colour!

People stop and starin’
I can’t see their faces
Only the shadows of their eyes

I can feel the other shoppers looking in astonishment at me prancing up to the UD counter, snatching the tester off the shelf and swiping my hand with Midnight Cowboy.

I’m goin’ where the sun keeps shinin’
Through the pourin’ rain.

Heaven! This rosy taupe-beige shadow with super glitter, packaged in a gorgeous serated tin is MINE! No longer am I in eyeshadow melancholia!

Goin’ where the weather suits my clothes
Bankin’ off of the northeast winds

Off I fly to pay for my purchase – buoyed by the fact that this wonderful shadow at S$25, makes no dent in my bank account.

Sailin’ on summer breeze
And skippin’ over the ocean like a stone…

Happiness is finding the perfect eye shadow colour to make my eye makeup more interesting. Nothing in my makeup repertoire looks like this and though the glitter sometimes migrates to my under eye area, this can be circumvented by using a good eyeshadow base like Paula Dorf Eye Primer or Benefit F.Y.eye!**. Even a sticky cream shadow below Midnight Cowboy does the trick. I’m on a high and I’m going to start everybody talking about Midnight Cowboy!

* Sung by Harry Nilsson, Everybody’s Talkin’ appeared in the classic movie Midnight Cowboy, starring John Voight and Dustin Hoffman.

** The first is a tacky eyeshadow base; the second creamier and more emollient. Both are flesh-toned colours.

that was a very fun read! I'm yet to try UD eyeshadows. it's such a shame that they're not available in Malaysia either :( AND they don't ship to Malaysia. well, at least now Beauty.com ships to Singapore. lucky for you all!

    Hello Sunny!

It has a languid feel to it too, doesn't it? :)

    Thank you, Connie!

The gorgeous looks you would create with UD e/s! Do you have something like VPost in MY? Alternatively, you could try to get a CP or do a swap with your international readers. :)
